I am a student before anything else.
Seon on the Mat is a personal record of what I
continue to learn through Ashtanga Yoga, the body, breath, Seon practice,
books, teachers, and the people I practice with.
I have practiced Ashtanga Yoga for many years, and over time
my questions have changed. I once cared greatly about how far I could go in a
posture or a series. These days, I am often more interested in different
questions: What is the body telling me today? What changes as we age? When
should we continue, and when should we stop? What does it mean to teach
something that has already passed through another person’s body and experience?
The body is where many of these questions begin.
That has led me to study anatomy, movement, breath, hands-on
guidance, and the ways our bodies change through practice and through life. I
am interested not only in what a posture looks like, but in the relationships
beneath it—between different parts of the body, between effort and rest,
between what we have learned and what we actually experience.
Seon practice enters these writings in a different way.
I do not consider Yoga and Buddhism to be the same
tradition, and I try not to force them into one another. But sometimes a
question that begins on the Yoga mat follows me into meditation, a Buddhist
text, or ordinary life. At other times, something I encounter in Seon gives me
a different way to look again at a familiar posture or habit.
Books and teachers are also an important part of this blog.
Some writings begin with a passage I have read, something a teacher once said,
or a small moment during practice. I try to distinguish what I have learned
from others from what I have personally experienced or interpreted.
Most of all, I write because practice continues to change.
The same sequence is never quite the same. The same body is
never quite the same. And something I thought I understood years ago may look
very different when I return to it now.
So this is not a collection of final answers.
It is a record of studying, practicing, questioning,
sometimes getting things wrong, looking again, and continuing to learn.
The body is where I begin.
Breath and mind are where the questions often lead.
Ordinary life is where the practice continues.

Seon on the Mat
| Seon on the Mat
